Profitably Building An Email List

The golden rule that I want you to remember is that regardless of what you are doing in business, you must always be doing it profitably.  Large corporations with 3rd party investors can afford to bleed in the short term and make it up down the road, but most individuals don't have the same luxury.  The same is true for building an email list.  If you can't build a list while making a profit, then the list will most likely be worthless also!

For this exercise, I'm going to show you how I setup FreeVideoStreamingTools.com.  In later case studies, I will show you several other versions of how other marketers are doing it but since I want to login to the database and show you the whole process, I'll use this one.

The drop down box on http://freevideostreamingtools.com is provided by Aweber, when people fill out the form it forwards them to the page that allows them to setup a free basic video membership.  This adds them to my Media Streaming Tips newsletter which comes out on a monthly basis offering them tips, advise and new services we offer for video & audio streaming.

Initially I just began marketing my courses for $49 & $19 ( $58 for both ).  I was selling about 1 out of every 80 visitors and nearly all of them were buying the $58 package.  The advertising was costing me about 35 cents per click through Google, so that was quite good.  It was costing about $28 to make a $58 sale so I had a comfortable 100% gross profit margin.  Even after merchant fees etc. it was still close to 90%.

But I Hate Selling Something Without Building A List!

Due to the fact that nearly every nickel I've made online has come from either video or email marketing, I wanted to start building a list.  What I'm currently testing is giving away a free basic video account.  So far the numbers haven't exceeded my prior results, but they haven't hurt them either.  So basically, right now I'm getting a list built for free!  In the long run, I know how much the list is worth so if I can build it without hurting my results that is incredible!

Next I'm going to create a new version where I don't offer them a free account, but simply offer the Streaming Media Newsletter for free.  Then I will test that against the other two and the one that turns out best will be the one I go with!  I like to give people the ability to try the scripts for free, but if I can get good marketing results without it then it will reduce my workload.

Remember!  The Key Is To Make A Profit While Building Your List!

When you purchase online advertising to initially get traffic to your web site, you should have 2 goals. 

#1 -  To sell a product or service and earn enough to pay for your advertising.

#2 -  Offer people something of value so they will join your mailing list.
